The down the hole method was originally developed to drill large diameter holes downwards in surface drilling applications. In the DTH drilling system, the hammer is located directly behind the drill bit and operates down the hole.
The piston strikes directly surface of the bit and the hammer transmits the impact energy. The amount of pressurized air coming from the compressor is effective in the operating speed of the piston. Therefore, flow rate, pressure and bar properties of the compressor plays a role in the effienciency of the hammer.
